artist biography

Romana Topic is a Geelong-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice is embedded in sustainable land management and focused, hands-on art and craft.

Her artwork is a direct expression of a working methodology that values both intuition and structure. She specialises in creating autobiographical detailed drawings that capture her life as a farmer. Romana also creates intricate sculptural installations, that transform raw and recycled materials into tangible forms. These dedicated, time-intensive processes reflects the long-term, patient commitment required for her work as a farmer: planting and maintaining native indigenous treelines, gardens and animal management. This combination of sustained discipline and imaginative artistry forms the elemental link within her work.

Romana has an established exhibition history, spanning over 13 years and nearly 60 shows, including a major eight-week solo exhibition at Whydham Art Space, Point Cook. She holds a BA in Creative Arts from Deakin University, Geelong and a Diploma of Fine Arts from Northern Beaches TAFE. She is open to commissions and strives to create raw and organic conceptual artwork that acknowledges and respects the environment.

artist statement

My artwork consists of a diverse range of media and subjects, ranging from portraiture to non-objective art. I consciously choose not to adhere to a single distinct style or medium, instead prioritizing the experimentation with various compositions, genres, and techniques.
My working methodology is a juxtaposition of intuition and structure: a process of creatively freeing myself, followed by the focused application of those learned techniques across my body of works.

I find profound therapeutic benefits in creating art hands-on. This age-old method grounds and inspires me. The satisfaction is invaluable—working directly with materials to form a tangible object, an outcome borne of years of trial and error.

I admire and am influenced by the structural ingenuity of M.C. Escher, the sensory experience of The Impressionists, and the vibrancy of Matisse. I am ever curiously looking to history to learn from the struggles and triumphs of past fellow artists.
